Why Tire Pressure Matters

When it comes to driving, tire pressure matters more than most people know. If a tire is overinflated, the weight of the vehicle isn't distributed evenly across the tire's surface. All of the weight is placed on a thin strip of rubber in the center, which causes the tire's treads to wear down unevenly. Meanwhile, underinflated tires are softer and force your vehicle to work harder to maintain a constant speed. Not only will this reduce your gas mileage, but it puts additional pressure on the outer edges of the tire and causes the treads to wear down unevenly much like an overinflated tire.

Improperly inflated tires can be dangerous, but fortunately it is easy to monitor your tires' pressure with a tire gauge. Check your pressure every week and make sure it is correct for your vehicle (typically between 30 and 35 PSI). If your tires are worn or won't maintain pressure, visit Lincoln of Peoria today to discuss buying new tires.
